In 1961, the communist government of East Germany began construction of a barbed wire and concrete fence meant to keep fascists from entering East Germany and undermining the socialist state. The Berlin Wall stood until 1986, when it was announced that citizens could finally freely move across the border. Some freely passed over into West Germany, while manner brought picks an hammers to bring down the wall themselves. The Berlin Wall remains a symbol of the Cold War.
